She is a bubbly character - full of life and energy, though she's a little clumsy and always making mistakes here and there ^^;;. She also has a strong sense of righteousness. Her mother died soon after she was born, but she doesn't even know how to do basic household chores (esp cooking) well. She belongs to the F-class in college (which is the class for students who get the worst results in the school). As a matter of fact, she is rather stupid - as in, her results are quite bad. [no offence!] She later got in the Faculty of Japanese Literature (a.k.a the F-class in university) ^^;;. Her arduous and ardent (on her part) lovelife started when she saw Naoki in the college opening school ceremony (i.e. her first year in college) - she fell instantly in love with him. On her third and last year in college, she wrote a love-letter to Naoki, but to get rejected flatly in the face. She was more than heartbroken.
Kotoko had a hard time trying to get Naoki's attention and liking - Naoki appeared indifferent to Kotoko and Kotoko had many love-rivals vying for Naoki's love (plus they are all better than Kotoko in many ways ^^;;). The most 'significant' one was Reiko. Kotoko determination and will was, however, strong enough and even though she tried giving up at times, she could not. Kotoko eventually got married to Naoki ^_^ (and becomes Irie Kotoko) when they were both in university school. What happened was, Naoki found out about Kinnosuke's proposal to Kotoko and, afraid that Kotoko would leave him, he proposed to Kotoko. Kotoko was, of course, overjoyed (to put it mildly) and even fainted. However, they did not live 'happily ever after'...
Kotoko switched from the Faculty of Japanese Literature to the Medical Faculty (to be a nurse), when Naoki switched to the Medical Faculty (to be a doctor), because Kotoko wanted to work alongside Naoki. She managed to get past the exam and became a nurse. However, she continued to wreak havoc in the hospital ^^;;. Nevertheless, Kotoko was glad that she could work together with Naoki (though she usually wasn't much of a help, not to say a trouble ^^;;). Basically, her love life was tough, but sweet ^.^ . written.
Just
when she was about to give up on Naoki, she found out that her house
collapsed in an earthquake, and it turned out that she would be living with
Naoki! Her love for Naoki rekindles... 
After their marriage, though Naoki was no
longer that indifferent, Kotoko had a hard time trying to 'ward off' her
love-rivals - there were more and more love-rivals.
