(Aihara) Papa is the father of Kotoko and an ex-classmate of Naoki's father. He is rather traditional in his thoughts in some ways, e.g. he does not allow Kotoko to date with someone younger than her (i.e. Takendo) and enjoys living in Japanese-style houses (Note: The Irie house is more of a western-style type of house.). [This is only my opinion and I feel that Aihara Papa is basically not very traditional.] He is an excellent chef and owns a restaurant called Fuji [I'm not sure about the name either ^^;;] and Kinnosuke works in his restaurant as an apprentice. He is very grateful to the Irie household for accomodating Kotoko and him. He was very surprised when Naoki asks him for Kotoko's hand in marriage [ok... who wasn't? ^^;;] because Kotoko did not seem like the kind of girl that Naoki would like - i.e. woman who are capable at home as well as in the society. -:-:-:-:-:-

(Irie)
Mama is the mother of Naoki and Yuuki and the wife of Irie Papa. She has
always been longing for a daughter, so much so that she even dressed Naoki
up as a girl ^^;; when he was young. This made Naoki grow up to be an aloof
person. Mama was therefore extremely happy (to put it mildly) when Kotoko
came to live with them. Among the Irie family, she was the one who liked
Kotoko the most. She was very glad (to put it mildly) when she found out
that Kotoko liked Naoki - and she was the one who always helped and
supported and spurred Kotoko on whenever Kotoko felt hopeless in her love
life. Mama even helped Kotoko fight against her love-rivals and always
reassured Kotoko that the one Naoki loves is her. Without Mama, Kotoko might
have really given up on Naoki. Mama was, of course, ecstatic (to put it
mildly) when Kotoko and Naoki got married. As Satomi (Kotoko's friend) once
said, Kotoko is extremely lucky because she does not have the 'mother-in-law
and daughter-in-law' type of problems ^.^. 
(Irie)
Papa is the father of Naoki and Yuuki, and also an ex-classmate of
Kotoko's father. He is a friendly and easy-going person and is normally
always smiling - he likes Kotoko and (Aihara) Papa very much and treats them
very well. He owns a large toy company (selling mainly toys for little boys)
called Pandai [I'm not sure about the name ^^;;]. Initially, he hoped that
Naoki would succeed to his company, but he eventually respected Naoki's
decision to be a doctor.
Irie
Yuuki is the 2nd and youngest child of Irie Papa and Mama, and the
younger brother of Naoki. At the start of the story, Yuuki is a Primary 3
boy - rather 'round' and short ^^;;. He adores his brother, Naoki, because
Naoki is very intelligent, handsome and is impressed by Naoki's coldness
towards girls even though he is so popular in school. He wants to be like
Naoki and therefore, behaves like Naoki. In fact, Yuuki is also very
intelligent, but as Kotoko said, he is more of the 'hardworking type' than
the 'genious type'. Initially, he disliked Kotoko because of Kotoko's
stupidity and clumsiness. However, as time passed, he began to see the good
side of Kotoko - her kindness, and started to like Kotoko. However, he did
not want others to see that and therefore, remained unfriendly to Kotoko and
continued 'bullying' her. However, he would be nice to Kotoko whenever he
knows that Kotoko is feeling sad. He was the first one to find out that
Naoki actually loved Kotoko (and was more than surprised) - and in a way,
helped Naoki and Kotoko get together. For example, when Naoki was to be
engaged to another girl (Sasuiko), Yuuki knew that Naoki did not like
Sasuiko and confronted Naoki about the issue, telling Naoki that he (Naoki)
doesn't like Sasuiko because the one he (Naoki) likes is Kotoko. When he was
in secondary school and college, he had a girlfriend called Konomi, who had
been secretly in love with Yuuki ever since she was in primary school.
Konomi is somewhat like Kotoko in character - and Kotoko was the one who
helped Konomi and Yuuki get together. It is rather ironical that Yuuki
should fall in love with Konomi, just like Naoki falling in love with Kotoko,
because Yuuki once said that he would never love someone like Kotoko
^^;;.
